El Campello

El Campello is a town on the Costa Blanca of Spain, within the Valencian Community. It is a 20-minute tram ride from Alicante city. There is a busy marina and fish market. The tower overlooking the harbour was built in the 16th century as a lookout for Berber pirates. During the day, smoke signals warned other towers along the coast of the pirates' pending arrival, and fires were lit when it was dark.

During October each year, the town holds its moros i cristians (Moors and Christians) festival. The festival includes daily "battles" through the town, where arquebuses are extensively used. There are numerous parades and late night fireworks displays. The evening parades through the centre of the town are resplendent with extravagant costumes.

Alicante

Alicante is a port city on Spain’s southeastern Costa Blanca, and the capital of the Alicante province. Its old town, Barrio de la Santa Cruz, has narrow streets, colored houses and a lively nightlife scene. From here, an elevator or a steep climb leads to medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara, set on a hilltop with sweeping views of the Mediterranean coast.

What is the location of Busot?

Busot is positioned in the Costa Blanca, in the Alicante province between Valencia and Murcia. The town is situated to the north of Alicante city, 19 km to be exact, to the west of Benidorm and the south of Javea and Denia. You can reach Busot by coming along the AP-7 motorway. There are three airports in the region to you to choose from. By far the closest is Alicante airport which is 35 km from the centre of the town. But, you also have two other very distinct choices. First choice is to the south in the neighbouring province of Murcia. Murcia airport is located 118 km distance but is ideal if you want to see some of these southern part of the province. To the north at a distance of 180 km is Valencia airport. As of 2008, with the town has a population of 3, 021 people.

Busot Car Hire

The Costa Blanca is a really beautiful place to visit. Many people come here with the expectations are of having a good time in one of the cities, relaxing on the beach, and not really thinking about doing much more. But, there is so much more to do in this area. Now, because there is such a lack of public transport in the Costa Blanca you really must rent a car if you are going to get about at all. Your best bet is to have a car booked for when you land at the airport. All the major car rental companies have representation at the airport and many of the local (and sometimes cheaper) car companies will also be represented here. Make sure that if you are touring in land that you either purchase a really good map of the area or you hire a GPS with your car. Modern GPS systems are basically plug and go. You basically type in the name of the place that you want to travel to, press go and follow the directions. Just make sure that you bring all the correct documentation with you including your passport and driving licence.

A Bit About Busot

History

Much like the surrounding area of the town of Busot, the origins of the town date back to the earlier Muslim inhabitants. From their humble beginnings castles were built as well as industries for manufacturing old glass. Found in the ruins of ancient ovens were glass waste, supporting the existence of these ancient glass industries. The town was a part of the Kingdom of Castille, ruled over by King Alfonso X during the mid 13th century. A few decades later, the town was owned by the Kingdom of Valencia. Under the Catholic nobility, Alfonso Martinez de Vera owned the town of Busto. Ownership of the town was passed down to his descendants until the latter part of the 18th century when Busot gained its independence.

Architecture

Although several centuries have already passed, it is surprising that a number of structures dating as far back as the early Moorish settlements still exist today. Although structures such as the 12th century Arab castle are already in ruins, they are still a striking testament of what the early settlers had achieved during their time. A number of structures such as the Parish Church of San Lorenzo and the Ermita de San Jose were built at a much later period but for more religious purposes. Another structure known as the Cabrafich Tower is actually considered part of the town of El Campello but is worth noting as it lies on the border which separates the two towns.

Tourist Attraction

The municipality of Busot is built near the mountain of Cabeco d’Or. It is a known tourist destination, more so for its nearness to the Caves of Canelobre. Located high up in the mountains, the immense caves measure 45 meters in terms of height, 35 meters in width and 45 meters in length. Tourists will enjoy seeing the magnificent formations made by the stalagmites and stalacmites.

What to Do

Spain is known for more than just its wonderful scenery and lovely terrain. A nation composed primarily of Catholics, their calendar is filled with events and activities mainly influenced by religion. There are several holidays celebrated nationally while they were others that are unique to each particular town or municipality. One such event is known as the Schutzheiligenfest. This is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. Busot’s patron saint is Saint Lawrence and the festivity is held on August 10. Another celebration is in honor of Saint Vincent where processions between the Moors and Christians are performed. This event is normally held during sometime during April.

Sport in Busot

The climate and terrain of Spain is conducive for physical activity. When not enjoying the nearby areas, residents and tourists can take advantage of the many sporting facilities made available for them. These facilities are not just limited for soccer, which the Spanish are known for and love. Even with a small municipality such as Busot there are several facilities accommodating a wide range of sports and activities. There are three sporting facilities available for public use. These include the Sports City which has separate areas for indoor soccer, recreational swimming and different types of tennis. In CP San Lorenzo Martir there is an area built exclusively for playing indoor soccer. Lastly is the Ducks Football Field which is specifically for football use.

Right through the year, the climate in the area of Busot is sun-drenched. There are magnificent warm sun-drenched summers and balmy sun-drenched winters. It does not rain frequently here, but when it does it can show its face in sheets, and the thunderstorms here can be totally outstanding.
